New Bird Flu Transferred Directly From Chicken, Study Says

bird flu virusChinese scientists now found a strong evidence of how humans became infected with the new strain of bird flu: through chickens at live market.

The scientists compare swabs from birds at markets in eastern China to virus samples from four patients who caught the new H7N9 virus. They found out that the virus from one patient was nearly identical to one found in chicken.

Chinese scientists took nearly 48,000 samples from animals in live market but only found 39 positive test for H7N9. Experts suspected that birds in markets to be the source of infection. They are not sure, though, if other animals might also be responsible.

Officials have shut down live poultry markets in the affected region, which seem to have slowed down the virus. Taiwan confirmed its first case earlier this week.
