NASA officials have issued a statement in response to a new song from Beyonce, saying the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster “should never be trivialized.”
Challenger audio use
Beyonce’s new song reportedly features an audio recorded just after the space shuttle exploded on takeoff in 1986, which left all seven astronauts died.
The statement comes after the pop star started to receive criticism from the families of the Challenger tragedy and others for using the short sample, which includes the words “major malfunction” as a reference to a failed relationship.
Intention to use recordings
NASA issued a response after Beyonce defends her intention to use the audio.
“The Challenger accident is an important part of our history,” said NASA press secretary Lauren B. Worley. “…a tragic reminder that space exploration is risky and should never be trivialized.”
The use of the recordings, Beyonce explained, was intended to “help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen.”
