How does the wastewater treatment work, anyway?
All wastewater treatments involve two actions:
- Eliminating solid, floating debris in the water.
- Neutralizing harmful compounds and organic matter in the water.
This way, the water can be safely returned to nature without risk of harming surrounding ecosystems.
But what are the different types of treatment for wastewater? Take a look at some:
- Nitrogen removal – You need to remove the ammonia from the water that runs through your plant or factory. To do this, most treatment methods involve introducing organic matter or aeration to neutralize the ammonia. Air that is filled with specific bacteria dissolves the oxygen in the ammonia then lets the rest evaporate.
- Phosphorus removal – You can decide to remove this element through organic or chemical means. Chemicals can be added to create detritus that can make the phosphorus easy to filter out. Biologically, bacteria is introduced in an anaerobic environment. The bacteria die as they consume the substance, which is then easier to filter out with a wastewater clarifier.
- Flotation – Instead of chemicals or bacteria, this type of treatment involves particles being actively skimmed off the top of the water mechanically. Bubbles are jetted from the bottom of the water so that the contaminants float upwards and are carefully taken off the top and disposed of properly.
